Has liberalism failed because it has succeeded? Of the three dominant ideologies of the twentieth century—fascism, communism, and liberalism—only the last remains. This has created a peculiar situation in which liberalism’s proponents tend to forget that it is an ideology and not the natural end-state of human political evolution. As Patrick Deneen argues in this provocative book, liberalism is built on a foundation of contradictions: it trumpets equal rights while fostering incomparable material inequality; its legitimacy rests on consent, yet it discourages civic commitments in favor of privatism; and in its pursuit of individual autonomy, it has given rise to the most far-reaching, comprehensive state system in human history. Here, Deneen offers an astringent warning that the centripetal forces now at work on our political culture are not superficial flaws but inherent features of a system whose success is generating its own failure.

“Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;. Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.”
Necessarily provocative stuff. Elites prosper - whatever the system. It’s hard to imagine that liberalism is not sufficiently adaptive; but I suppose that’s the point.

And conservatism is just scared people trying to hold onto what they have. Change is constant, conservatism holds everyone back.

snapjack A thoroughly uninformed, childish statement.
Conservatism allows a nation to progress, innovate, invent and grow. I came from a “Socialist Paradise”. Hell on earth.
Read the book with an open mind. Not the hive mind prevalent today.

@Snapjack - That’s an interesting one; but first, we shouldn’t conflate/confuse two conflicting definitions of liberalism. Classical liberalism, properly construed, is the political philosophy of individualism, liberty, the rule of law, economic freedom, free trade, limited govt, private property, human rights, freedom of expression (John Locke, the Social Contract, etc.). Liberals, correctly defined, can be conservatives (but that’s another ball of perplexity). I think the confusion of terms arose in America.
On the conservatism thing: broadly speaking, how many non-conservatives are there, in actuality? How often do we meet someone who isn’t a conservative in relation to something? Once one reaches a point of understanding in relation to value, one necessarily enters into a relationship of conservation/preservation with that phenomenon/value. Useful values are preserved. Think of education in this way: as an all-purpose good.
Also, alteration is indeed constant, and orthodoxies do change. And the “new” regnant, prevailing orthodoxy can be harmful, in that it may hold society/systems in a state of almost frozen ruin.

Conservatism as practiced in the US is a form of liberalism it’s just further to the right. For that matter we don’t even have liberal party in the US today at all. The closest the US has to liberala are libertarians, and of those are tea party types not really libertarians at all.
Using it in the context smapjack used liberal are neoliberals which is best described as liberal concepts which are state enforced not just for harm or damage but also ideologically to some degree.
Neoliberalism has all the flaws of classical liberalism with additional contradictions. A SJW doesn’t have much of a home as a liberal but is embraced as a neoliberal. A liberal doesn’t care if you are offended, but a to a neoliberal that’s potentially a crime.
I suspect the book is about Neoliberalism based off the description.

“Conservatism allows a nation to progress, innovate, invent and grow.”
In much the same way that capitalism fosters innovation.
Taking all of the credit for the work other people do sounds like such a socialist idea, yet it is the constant habit of you sackless neofascists.

Thank you for sharing this! I’m sure it will be an interesting read… even the comments are interesting, in spite of the fact that labels and name-calling, as always, run amok among one side of the comments lol.

It is not that American “liberalism” failed or American traditional “conservatism” failed, as they both are stomped into the ground by dark money and big corporation, .1% money in politics. Real conservatives cannot even get on the ballot.

I think this wishful bot just short-circuited. Must be an obsolete model.
No less than 10 discrete disintegrations?!
Read with enhanced comprehension, ole froot.
Snapjack introduced the political dichotomy. There followed an explanation of terms. Fairly basic stuff (for, er, non-Americans?). “The confusion of terms arose in America” - natch.
So you fried your circuits for nothing.
Think before you type, rather than repeating garbled nonsense, ad bloody nauseam!

I wish it was true. I wish liberalism was dead. But unfortunately it is thriving in Western countries and trying to infect the rest of the world.
If you live in the “global south”, do everything you can to oppose this poisonous modern ideology. Not all of us Westerns are the enemy; some of us oppose liberalism but we are in the minority. Liberals here control politics, the government bureaucracy, most of the media, all of academia, corporations, the film and television industries…
