When the children of his village were struck with a mysterious illness, Number Ten Ox sought a wiseman to save them. He found master Li Kao, a scholar with a slight flaw in his character. Together, they set out to find the Great Root of Power, the only possible cure.
The quest led them to a host of truly memorable characters, multiple wonders, incredible adventures—and strange coincidences, which were really not coincidences at all. And it involved them in an ancient crime that still perturbed the serenity of Heaven. Simply and charmingly told, this is a wry tale, a sly tale, and a story of wisdom delightfully askew. Once read, its marvels and beauty will not easily fade from the mind.
The author claims that this is a novel of an ancient China that never was. But, oh…it should have been!
Note: This is one of my favorite books, that unfortunatly never got an audiobook version. After running across Elevenlabs and playing around with it, I decided to have it make an audioversion of the book. I hope that some people will try it out and enjoy the book. Thank you! It is a wonderful book – very much in the tradition of Ernest Bramah’s Kai Lung (or Terry Pratchett, to take an example better known today).
I was apprehensive about the AI narrator, especially given all the Chinese names in the story, but judging from the first few minutes it’s not bad. (It handles the names fine, but struggles with creative punctuation and things that aren’t words.) There are some occasional minor audio glitches, probably from how it was generated.
I would encourage anyone who can to read it rather than listen to an AI reading, but this appears to be a good alternative if that’s not an option.

So depressed and sad that this is an AI narrator. Was this book never narrated by human?
The main character’s name is Number Ten Ox, not Number Ten: Ox
