For general readers, a compact and illuminating introduction to Islam, from its beginnings almost 1500 years ago to the present moment.
While much has been written about Islam, particularly over the twenty-five years, few books have explored the full range of the ideas that have defined the faith over a millennium and a half. Fitzroy Morrissey provides a clear and concise introduction to the origins and sources of Islamic thought,
from its beginnings in the 7th century to the current moment. He explores the major ideas and introduces the major figures–those who over the centuries have broached life’s major questions, from the nature of God and the existence of free will to gender relations and the ordering of society, and in
the process defined Islam. Drawing on Arabic and Persian primary texts, as well as the latest scholarship, A Short History of Islamic Thought explains the key teachings of the Qur’an and Hadith, the great books of Islamic theology, philosophy, and law, as well as the mystical writings of the Sufis.
It evaluates the impact of foreign cultures-Greek and Persian, Jewish and Christian-on early Islam, accounts for the crystallization of the Sunni and Shi’i forms of the faith, and accounts for the rise of such trends as Islamic modernism and Islamism. Above all, it reveals the fundamental principles
of Islamic thought, both as a source of inspiration for Muslims today and as illuminating and rewarding in their own right.

To sum up the entirety of this book: Allahu Akbar!!

Best summed up as conquerors synthesising the elements of the conquered to their purposes while suppressing their communities and eventually shutting their minds to everything except their orthodoxies while the world spins on without them.

There’s an element of that, Honey, but there was also a fruitful time of openness to ideas. Maimonides & Aquinas thought highly of some of these thinkers. It’s useful to conceive of the dynamic of cultural exchange.
As to the world spinning on in their absence, Islam is abt to become the world’s largest religion.
And if we were to imagine ‘the world’ as principally the concerns of the West, well, we’re shrinking fast as a proportion.

Islam is an ideology of extremes. On the one hand… they collected books from those cities they conquered whose inhabitants they enslaved. On the other hand… they burned books. Caliph Omar pronounced: “If these writings of the Greeks agree with the book of God, they are useless and need not be preserved; if they disagree, they are pernicious and ought to be destroyed.” In 1988, the publication in England of Salman Rushdie’s third novel, The Satanic Verses, attracted praise, award nominations and many readers. The book also was BURNED at rallies in ENGLAND by savage Islamic fundamentalists and furthermore banned in India, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini commanded Moslems to KILL the author and put a multi-million dollar price on his head. Following that, and BOMB threats against the publisher, Rushdie and Viking Penguin canceled a U.S. book tour that was to begin this week! Imagine for one second, if any other non-Muslim theistic state leader (in the western world) ordered the assassination of a fiction author. This ideology that calls itself Islam is nothing but fascism in the guise of religion. How fragile civilization is; how easily, how merrily a book burns! Choose your ethics carefully. The willful apologists for evil (in all its manifestations) are the co-conspirators of evil, equally culpable, equally injurious.

Thank you! :)
Islam is always this and that. Yet, all the countries Islam annexed are still under the rule of the native popular and in the examples of Spain and India, the countries aren’t even Muslim. It’s always easy to single out Islam and accuse it of spreading through war when this was the norm of all times (if you think this has come to pass, explain the Zionist subjugation of Palestinians and Russia-Ukraine). How about countries as Turkey, Malaysia and Indonesia to which no Muslim Army marched, yet are Islamic countries today? Imagine the status of the Western civilisation if not for the scholarship of Islam.

Before Islam there was no civilisation, only slavery to men pretending to be divine.
